MSITM & MSIS Technical Prerequisites

How Technical Do You Need to Be Before You Apply?

There is no universal prerequisite standard across MSITM, MSIS, MSIM and related degrees. Some programs expect coding, databases and quantitative coursework before enrollment; others deliberately admit students from any undergraduate major; and several use foundation or bridge coursework to close the gap.

Programs with clearly published technical preparation

Program Published preparation What it means for applicants
UT Austin – MS Business Technology & AI Programming and database coursework or professional experience One of the clearer programs for applicants who already have a technical foundation.
Carnegie Mellon – MISM For-credit pre-calculus or higher math, introductory statistics, and Python, Java or C++ with B or better before enrollment Strong quantitative/technical readiness is expected; conditional admission may be possible when preparation is incomplete.
Rutgers – MITA Calculus, probability/statistics and proficiency in at least one programming language Best suited to applicants comfortable with quantitative and technical work.
Texas A&M – MS MIS Programming, database management, systems analysis/design and business data communications/networking Applicants may be admitted with courses outstanding, but Mays says completing at least two before applying strengthens competitiveness.
NJIT – MS Business & Information Systems Object-oriented programming plus data structures and algorithms NJIT describes this as preparation typically acquired through a STEM bachelor’s degree.
Santa Clara – MSIS One college-level programming course in Python, Java, C, C++ or C# A lighter prerequisite than several programs above, but applicants still need formal programming exposure.
Arizona State – MS IT Related technical degree plus depth in IT/computer science; ASU Online also expects programming plus networking, security and database preparation One of the more clearly technical entry profiles in the database.
UConn – MSBAPM One semester of college-level calculus or statistics with C or better Formal quantitative preparation is required, although prior coding is not listed as an admission prerequisite.

Programs that use foundations, bridges or flexible preparation

Program Approach
Indiana Kelley – MSIS Foundation coursework must be completed before the MSIS core; Kelley offers an on-campus Jumpstart pathway for students who need prerequisites.
Northeastern – MSIS The standard Boston MSIS expects an engineering or similar undergraduate degree, while a separate MSIS Bridge pathway is designed for students with non-engineering bachelor’s degrees.
BU MET – MSCIS Uses free non-credit preparatory labs in computer information systems, mathematics and probability to bridge students into graduate work.
Penn State World Campus – MS Information Science Applicants without the expected quantitative/business/IT background may complete self-paced bridge coursework and must score at least 80% on assessments.
UW–Milwaukee – MS ITM Students admitted without sufficient background may need additional coursework; the program serves both career changers and experienced IT professionals.
Temple Fox – ITACS Applicants without sufficient IT preparation may be required to take MIS 5122 Enterprise Architecture for IT Auditors, adding three credits.
Florida – MS ISOM / IT Students without a business major/minor complete additional business-core coursework; programming is recommended rather than required.

Programs explicitly open to broad academic backgrounds

Program Published admissions fit
University of Washington – MSIM No specific undergraduate major or prerequisite coursework required. Mid-Career applicants need at least five years of post-baccalaureate professional experience.
Illinois – MSIM Bachelor’s degree can be in any discipline; no GRE/GMAT requirement.
Michigan – MSI No specific undergraduate major required; bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a recommended 3.0 GPA.
Georgia State – MSIS Robinson explicitly enrolls students with and without prior IT experience; work experience is preferred but not required.
Maryland – MS Information Systems & AI No business degree required; Smith welcomes varied academic backgrounds and highlights quantitative preparation in statistics and mathematics.
Syracuse – MSIS No specific undergraduate major published as a prerequisite.
Cincinnati – MSIS Applicants with a bachelor’s degree from any field are eligible; Lindner generally looks for a B / 3.0-equivalent academic record.
UT Dallas – MS ITM Applicants from all undergraduate majors are considered; statistics supports later coursework, and the curriculum itself introduces programming/database/system-analysis foundations.
Virginia Tech – Master of IT Virginia Tech explicitly says prior IT experience is not required; the online program is built to serve working professionals from varied backgrounds.
Fordham – MS Information Technology Fordham says a technology background is not necessary; non-business majors complete a self-study IT/business module.
FAU Professional MSITM Accepts a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and requires no business prerequisite courses; professional experience is part of the fit.
USF – MS AI in Business Digital Transformation explicitly requires no coding experience; Enterprise Integration is the more technical build/deploy path for recent and early-career applicants.

How to use this information

A program with more prerequisites is not automatically better, and an open-background program is not automatically less technical. The key question is where the curriculum starts. Applicants who already code and work with databases should look for advanced AI, cloud, architecture and engineering depth. Career changers should look for programs that provide enough foundation work to make the advanced courses realistic.

Before applying: verify whether prerequisites must be completed before application, before enrollment or during the degree; whether foundation courses count toward graduation; and whether professional experience can substitute for formal coursework.
