What International Students Should Verify Before Choosing a Program
For international applicants, a program’s STEM designation can materially affect post-graduation work planning. A school calling a program “technology” or “information systems” does not by itself establish STEM eligibility; the specific degree/CIP code matters.
STEM OPT basics
Eligible F-1 students with a qualifying STEM degree may apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension beyond the standard post-completion OPT period, subject to current USCIS/DHS requirements. The qualifying degree must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, and STEM OPT employment has additional requirements including an eligible E-Verify employer and a Form I-983 training plan.
International-student decision checklist
| Question | Why it matters | Where to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Is this exact degree STEM-designated? | The program name alone does not determine STEM OPT eligibility. | MSITM.com STEM comparison plus the university’s international office. |
| Does the delivery mode support F-1 enrollment? | A fully online degree may not work for a student who needs an I-20 and in-person enrollment. | Ask the program and designated school official about the exact campus/format. |
| What is the international deadline? | Visa-document processing often makes the international deadline earlier than the domestic deadline. | 2027 deadline tracker. |
| How strong is the career evidence for international students? | Overall placement can hide different visa-sponsorship and job-search experiences. | Ask for international-specific outcomes and use the career transparency guide. |
| Can CPT/internships fit the calendar? | Accelerated programs may leave a shorter internship window. | Confirm curricular internship rules and timing with the university. |
