A Practical Application Timeline
Deadlines vary widely, but applicants can reduce rushed decisions by working backward from the earliest priority deadline.
For Fall 2027 applicants as of September 18, 2026: this is no longer an abstract planning exercise. Several early rounds arrive in October and November. Fordham lists an October 9 Round 1, UT Austin October 13, Georgia State October 26, Indiana Kelley November 1 and University of Washington November 18. Applicants targeting early scholarship or priority consideration should be finalizing recommenders, transcripts, résumé/essay drafts and any required testing now. See the live deadline table →
9–12 months before enrollment
- Define target roles and preferred program type.
- Build a long list and compare curriculum, format, cost and outcomes.
- Identify prerequisites you are missing.
- International applicants: verify STEM/CIP status, English-language requirements and visa-document timelines.
6–9 months before enrollment
- Request transcripts and identify recommenders.
- Draft your résumé and statement of purpose.
- Take the GRE/GMAT only where required or where a strong score could materially strengthen the application.
- Apply by scholarship/priority rounds when practical.
3–6 months before enrollment
- Complete remaining applications.
- Compare offers using net tuition after scholarship—not sticker price alone.
- Review assistantship, internship and housing options.
- Ask schools for current career-outcome reports if they are not publicly posted.
After admission
- Compare deposits and decision deadlines.
- Model opportunity cost and financing.
- Confirm the curriculum for your entering cohort; catalogs can change.
- International students should work directly with the school’s international office on immigration documentation.
