Different Acronyms, Overlapping Career Goals
The technology-management master’s market has no single naming standard. Two programs using different acronyms can be much more similar than two programs using the same acronym. MSITM.com therefore compares curriculum, academic home, prerequisites, format and outcomes rather than treating the degree title as a category boundary.
| Label | Typical meaning | Current examples | What can vary |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSITM | MS Information Technology & Management | FAU, Oakland, UNCG; UT Austin formerly used MSITM | Can range from technical IT management to business-school technology strategy. |
| MSIS | MS Information Systems | Kelley, Georgia State, Syracuse, Stevens, Santa Clara, CU Denver, FIU and others | May be business-school, engineering/computing or information-school oriented. |
| MIS / MS MIS | Management Information Systems | Arizona, Texas A&M, Houston, Oklahoma State, Nebraska Omaha | Often business-school based but technical depth differs substantially. |
| MSIM | MS Information Management | Washington, Illinois | Often broader information/data/governance framing rather than classic enterprise MIS. |
| MISM | Master of Information Systems Management | Carnegie Mellon | Can combine technical systems, analytics and management at high intensity. |
| Other modern titles | Business Technology, AI in Business, Business Analytics, IT Auditing/Cyber | UT Austin, USF, UConn, Temple | May be direct competitors for the same applicants even though the title is specialized. |
Why the title can mislead
UT Austin renamed its former MSITM to MS Business Technology & AI in 2026. Maryland now uses MS Information Systems & AI. Rutgers uses Master of Information Technology & Analytics. All still compete for many of the same technology-business roles and applicants.
